The episode starts with a news broadcast on FOX 11 (The scenes at the beginning of the episode flip back and forth between the news shots and the regular shots). The reporters tell what is happening during a car chase in Idaho Nevada. The Nevada Highway Patrol are trying to stop a car going over 100 mph. They see a hand in the back window of the car; they assume there is a hostage.

The police put out a road block that slows down the car until it comes to a stop. They pull Patrick Crump out of the driver's seat, and help his wife, Vicky Crump, whom they assume to be a hostage, into one of the cars.

Vicky is obviously sick. She starts banging her head on the window of the car, as her husband continues to scream for her, trying to save her. Suddenly there is a lot of blood on the window.

BUHL, IDAHO
Mulder and Scully are making routine checks on would-be terrorists on fertilizer. They stop at a farmhouse to talk to a man, and while inside they see the news about Crump. The reports are saying they don't know what killed the 'hostage' and that an autopsy hasn't been performed yet. Mulder talks Scully into a secretive trip to Elko Nevada, saying 'they'll never know.'

ELKO, NEVADA
Mulder and Scully end up at the Elko Precinct Jail where Crump is being held. In his cell his nose is bleeding, and a noise is heard. He screams for someone to help him, that 'it's starting.'

Meanwhile, Mulder and Scully are told they won't be able to see Crump after what happened, but that a doctor is giving him the medical attention he needs. The police there think Crump is crazy, even though he has no previous record. Mulder stays to see if he can question Mr. Crump while Scully goes to the morgue. Also, Mulder looks at Crump's route he took. He started to go east from his home, but then turned around and went west.

At the morgue, a woman let's Scully view the body. There is no entry wound, or gunpowder, just an exit wound. Scully looks into Vicky's ear and prods it until it starts bleeding and suddenly explodes again, splashing her front with blood.

Back at the jail Patrick is being taken on a gurney into an ambulance. Mulder tries to get in but they won't let him ride along. He follows in his car.

Inside the ambulance as they start to move, Crump seems to get better. The EMTs have no idea what happened. Crump eyes one of the officer's guns and the ambulance stops, as does Mulder, and Crump is suddenly out of the ambulance pointing the gun at Mulder. Thus begins the journey from Nevada to California.

At the morgue, Scully calls Mulder. He finally picks up and she tells him what happened, and she assumes that it is communicable. They found another body that appears to have died the same way, of a massive annurism. Scully tells him to have Crump, along with everyone that came into close contact with him, including Mulder, quarantined. Too late.

Through quarantine Scully talks to the police captain and he tells her that they have set up a road block for Mulder. The captain gets news that Crump will shoot Mulder if they don't back off. The cruisers drop back.

Mulder and Crump argue a bit until Crump decides to throw Mulder's cell phone out the window. Mulder isn't too thrilled with that, telling Crump that that was 'really stupid.'

As they come to a light, Mulder slows down and Crump's condition worsens. After realizing what's going on, Mulder pulls in front of the traffic and keeps going. He asks Crump for confirmation, if this is what happened to Vicky; slowing up worsens the condition, while speeding up makes it better. Crump agrees.

Avoiding a potential road block, Mulder drives a different route. He knows about the roadblock because a chopper is still following them.

At the morgue, the captain informs Scully that Mulder has taken a different route. He had hoped he would steer towards the road block. Scully thinks maybe he purposely avoided it because he knows something they don't.

Scully's cell phone rings, it's Kersh. He's angry but tells her the Las Vegas field office will assist her if need be.

Trying to make the connection between the two deaths, Scully realizes that since the second victim was a meter reader, maybe he went to Vicky Crump's house.

Back in the car, Mulder and Crump continue to argue. Crump tells Mulder to call him 'Mr. Crump.' Mulder replies with:

MULDER: I can think of something else I'd like to call you. I can put 'mister' in front of that too itf you'd like.

Crump yells at Mulder saying something about being a Jew, saying that 'Mulder' is a Jewish name. Mulder admits to being a Jew. After awhile Crump starts screaming that they're going the wrong way and banging his head. Mulder realizes that not only do they have to keep moving, but head west as well. Once Mulder starts heading west again the pain lessens.

CRUMP RESIDENCE
MONTELLO, NEVADA

At Crump's home Scully and three men dressed in contamination suits, one being a CDC doctor, investigate. Outside they see a dog tied up, but running around as much as it can. Scully thinks that this is what happened to Vicky Crump. They hold the dog down and go to get a blood sample of the dog, when it explodes, splashing the one man's face shield.

In the car Crump tells Mulder what happened that morning. His wife was fine until she got a headache and started screaming. He didn't know what to do but take her to the hospital. As he went faster she became better. Crump thinks that the government is performing some kind of tests on them.

The men take the dog away. Scully sees that they have neighbors. They go check it out. Inside no one answers when Scully calls out. Once in the living room, Scully sees someone sitting. The woman suddenly turns around screaming, scared of Scully, wanting to know who she is. Scully tells her it's OK that they're not going to hurt her, but the woman keeps screaming. Scully looks over to the television and sees captions running across the screen. The woman is deaf. Scully gets her to understand it's OK, and they get her out of the house.

The car is almost out of gas. Mulder stops at a gas station quickly but can't get the gas pumps to work right. He steals someone's car and leaves a note to Scully.

Scully talks about how whatever is happening affects the inner ear, and that where they are is ground zero for it. She talks about how the woman was OK when everyone and everything else around her died, people and animals. Since the woman is deaf, Scully deduces that maybe it's a sound that causes a similar hum to start in a person's head.

The captain calls Scully and tells her how not only is Mulder avoiding the road block, but that he stole a car. She tells him basically to trust him, that there has to be a reason. He continues to tell her that Mulder left a note to her. It says: "Crump sick. Will die if stopped, same as wife. Must head west to keep him alive. No roadblocks!"

Scully sees dead birds all over the ground. She finds a plate in the ground that says " GOVERNMENT PROPERTY--TAMPERING PUNISHABLE BY FINE AND INCARCERATION."

Crump continues to tell Mulder how he thinks the government is behind it. Mulder asks him if he thinks that if he dies the government's off the hook. As they come upon a sign saying they are entering California, Crump tells Mulder that they have to hurry. They're 'running out of west."

HORIZON VIEW
NAVAL RESEARCH STATION
WENDOVER, NEVADA

Scully goes to the research station and asks about the electrical equipment. The man tells her that there was a power surge that messed up televisions in four states. She wants to know theoretically if it could hurt someone, but he tells her it's classified and won't tell her anything else.

Once again back in the car, Crump continues to worsen. Mulder goes faster but nothing works for awhile. Police on motorcycles drive up beside them and one gives Mulder a cell phone. It's Scully.

SCULLY: Mulder. Are you OK?
MULDER: Yeah, aside from terminal cell phone withdrawl, that and I gotta pee.

Scully's on her way. She thinks she might be able to save Crump but he won't like what she has to do. She will inject a needle into his inner ear to try to relieve the pressure, however he probably will become deaf. Mulder relays the information to Crump. He wants to do it as long as it will save him.

LOLETA, CALIFORNIA
Scully awaits the car with needle in hand. It stops and she runs over to try to save Crump. It's too late. The window is covered in blood. Mulder gets out and looks over the water.

Back in A.D. Kersh's office, he is yelling at Mulder and Scully about all of the expenses. Mulder tells him to bill him but he says he will bill Scully instead.

Mulder leaves the room and Scully tells Kersh Mulder has been through a lot. He tells her to quit apologizing for him, that she does that a lot, which she denies doing. Kersh tells her their work on the X-Files is over and they need to realize that.

On the way out Scully makes a remark:

SCULLY: Big piles of manure.
