TEASER

A girl, Michelle, is running around hunting for Easter eggs while her mother, Martha Crittendon, talks with her friend Ellen. Martha is angry that one woman, Jenny, is there.

Michelle keeps searching when she sees a raven and screams. Jenny is standing there.

Martha has put her daughter to bed. She calls her husband to try to get him to come home because his daughter wants to see him.

Suddenly a raven is in the house, perching on her mantle. She sees a monster in the mirror, which breaks, and the creature attacks her.

ACT ONE

Fox MulderDana ScullyMulder and Scully are staking out a strip club for a woman they believe to be a serial killer. Scully is disgusted and wants to go home. During the watch a van pulls up that has religious things painted on it. They don’t even give it a second thought.

Mulder is called in by Skinner, who tells him of Martha’s disappearance. He tells Mulder that Martha’s husband is a judge, and has made the case Skinner’s top priority, and now he is making it his. He asks Mulder if there is any paranormal significance with the raven. Mulder talks about how it is a symbol of evil. He tells Mulder that Scully can handle the stakeout by herself.

Mulder goes to the house in Bethany, Vermont where Martha was abducted. The sheriff, Phil Adderly, is already there. Ellen is his wife, and is a good friend of Martha’s.

The sheriff tells Mulder that there was no ransom note, prints, or blood evidence. When Mulder looks inside, and the only things he sees are a broken mirror and slashes on the mantle. Mulder thinks that they could be from a raven.

Martha’s husband, Howard, comes out to talk to Mulder. He tells him that it may not have been necessary for him to come out after all. Howard found birth control pills. He and his wife had agreed not to have any more children, and he had a vasectomy, so he knew that she had been cheating on him. He also found a skeleton key with the number six on it.

Ellen is out with her baby posting signs about Martha’s disappearance, when she runs into [the woman from the beginning]. She asks her to put up signs in ‘her part of the neighborhood,’ not meaning it the way the woman takes it. The woman leaves.

Ellen looks into the reflection in the car window and sees the monster. The glass breaks instantly.

At the sheriff’s house, he tells Mulder that he doesn’t know who she was seeing. There are no phone records or anything. He asks if maybe the person took her to hurt her. Mulder tells him that doesn’t think so.

From looking at a book, Mulder has matched the talon marks on Martha’s mantle to that of a raven. Phil asks if he thinks that the ravens are the reason she is missing. He tells him he doesn’t, but that in folklore ravens are companions to evil. The sheriff doesn’t buy it. Mulder tells him that there was also a broken mirror in her house. Mirrors are considered items of enchantment, and a broken one could mean something.

Ellen comes in with her daughter Katie. She talks Mulder into staying at their house.

Mulder sits down to eat dinner with the two. Scully calls him on his cell phone. She complains that she wants to go home. She tells him that the furnace broke, and that she’s witnessed a couple hundred things that she’d like to erase from her memory. Meanwhile, Scully sees the same van as before pull up at the curb, but thinks nothing of it. She tells him that so far she has seen nothing of the mystery woman. He tells her just to wait, and she will show up. Scully tells him that it won’t be before she dies of malnutrition. In the sheriff’s house, Ellen is scooping food onto Mulder’s plate, and he tells her that he doesn’t want capers. Scully hears this, but he covers it up by saying ‘What a crazy caper,’ and tells her that he will call her later.

Michelle and her father are eating when they see a raven. Howard goes outside to check it out, and finds a bunch of them feeding on a human hand coming from the ground.

ACT TWO

Mulder and the sheriff are at the crime scene. The body that was found is Martha’s. The face is scratched up. The sheriff asks Mulder about the ravens, because Howard had mentioned them. The coroner tells him that they had been feeding on her body.

The sheriff tells Mulder that he’s not arresting Howard, because he knows he didn’t do it. Mulder agrees.

Ellen comes rushing in, even though her husband tries to stop her. She stops when she sees the body, and tells them that she thinks she saw the thing that she think killed Martha.

In the house, Ellen tells Mulder and the sheriff that she saw the monster in a reflection. Her husband doesn’t believe her, but Mulder does. He doesn’t think that the shattered window and Martha’s mirror are a coincidence. He says that mirrors are considered doorways. In the Victorian era they built mirror rooms called cyclomantiums (spelling?), where they thought they could summon spirits from the spirit world. The raven is attracted to death and decay. He theorizes that the entity she saw is somehow a personification of that, and was brought forth in order to attack Martha. The question is who summoned it. He asks Ellen if she knew of any enemies that Martha had.

The sheriff and Martha question Jenny. She says that she didn’t do it. When Mulder asks where she was at the time, she says that she was at home. They don’t think that she is the killer, but Mulder asks the sheriff why she would lie about her alibi.

Mulder’s cell phone rings. The sheriff tells him he’ll be in the car waiting for him.

MULDER: Mulder.
SCULLY: Mulder, when you find me dead, my desiccated corpse propped up, staring lifelessly through the telescope of drunken frat boys peeing and vomiting into the gutter, just know that my last thoughts were of you. And how I’d like to kill you.
MULDER: I’m sorry, who is this?

Scully continues on to tell Mulder that it is a freak show. It’s a nonstop parade of every lowlife imaginable. Mulder tells her that the view there might not be any different, just dressed up a little nicer. She tells him that it’s not the same. Mulder says that the case is more interesting than he first thought, and he could use her help. He tells her that she can autopsy the body. Suddenly Scully notices the van again outside the window and tells Mulder that she’ll talk to him later.

Ellen is vacuuming when she finds a skeleton key. Suddenly, she sees the raven in her daughter’s room, and then the monster in a mirror before it breaks. She hides in the closet with her baby, until her husband is there.

Ellen tells Mulder and her husband that the monster came back and chased her. Once again, the sheriff still does not believe his wife.

He tells Mulder that he doesn’t want him encouraging Ellen. He says that he looked everywhere and found no evidence of anyone being in the house. Mulder asks about the broken mirrors, but he thinks that his wife probably broke them herself. Mulder notices the key on the floor and picks it up. It matches the other one. Mulder asks Ellen about it, but she doesn’t know anything about it, she saw it for the first time right before she saw the raven and was a attacked. The sheriff takes the key, and says that he will find out what it opens.

During the night, the sheriff sneaks out. He goes to the Pineview Lodge - room 6 - to sleep with Jenny. The camera pans to the mirrors on the ceiling.

ACT THREE

Mulder gets up in the morning and eats breakfast that Ellen cooked. Her husband is not there. She explains that he’s probably just out on a call, and that he’ll be back.

ELLEN: I get the feeling you’re not used to anyone taking care of you.
MULDER: Well, that has a, a vaguely pathetic ring to it.
ELLEN: No, I just meant I didn’t notice a wedding band.
MULDER: Oh.
ELLEN: Do you have a, a significant other?
MULDER smiles a little
MULDER: Uh, not in the widely understood definition of that term.
<I think he is implying that he has someone he feels that way about and wishes it was that way.>

She tells him that the right woman will come along and change all that. <Here he kind of looks like he’s thinking ‘I already have.’>She says not to miss out on home and family. It could become his refuge from all the horrible things he sees in his job.

The sheriff comes back. Ellen leaves to check on Katie. The sheriff asks Mulder if he slept well, and he tells him that he only woke up once - when he left the house. Mulder questions that he was gone all night. Mulder tells him that the autopsy showed that Martha had been four weeks pregnant when she was killed, despite her birth control pills, and probably didn’t even know it. He asks him who he thinks the father is, since it couldn’t have been her husband’s. He implies that it is the sheriff’s, and asks for the evidence (key) back. The sheriff gives it to him. Mulder tells him that once he finds out what it unlocks, they’ll talk again.

Jenny is talking on the phone to her son, Brett, and is ready to leave, when the monster attacks her after she has seen ravens outside her window. Before she is killed, she stabs a piece of the mirror into the monster’s shoulder.

Mulder is at the crime scene, where he checks the key in the room. It works. Mulder gets the sheriff to admit that he was sleeping with Jenny and Martha. He tells him that he wanted a divorce from Ellen but she became pregnant and wouldn’t give it to him. She won’t hear of it. He tells Mulder that he left Jenny sleeping, and didn’t kill anyone.

The sheriff asks if it’s possible that everything is happening because of him and that the entity was summoned and he didn’t know about it.

The sheriff leaves a message for his wife that he needs to talk to her, and that Mulder is on his way over.

Ellen comes in her house and puts the baby to bed. She has a large gash on her shoulder.

ACT FOUR

Ellen is in the bathroom ready to take a bath. She feels something and looks on her shoulder. She has a big gash. She is shocked. She starts seeing flashes of being stabbed by the woman, and knows what happened.

Mulder comes into to the house, calling for Ellen. Suddenly his cell phone rings.

SCULLY: Mulder, I am free.
MULDER: You’re free?
SCULLY: Umhmm. I’m gonna go home, take a shower, for, I don’t know, eight or nine hours, burn the clothes that I’m wearing, and then sleep until late spring.

He asks if she solved the X-File. She tells him that she did, but that it wasn’t an X-File. She assures him that they caught their ‘blond mystery serial killer,’ but that she isn’t a serial killer, nor is she a blond, and she isn’t even a she. She tells him that the six missing prostitutes are alive and well in a half-way house that was set up by the mystery blond, who happens to go by the name of Mark Scott Egbert. Egbert wishes to acquaint lost souls with the teachings of Christ. He dresses up like a prostitute to make the girls feel at ease. The vanishing act is no more paranormal than a change of wardrobe. He goes into a place as a woman and comes out as a man. A wolf in sheep’s clothing, but in this case a sheep in wolf’s clothing. He tells her good work and that he’ll call her back later. He has figured out that the same thing is happening with the case he is on.

Raven

He calls out to Ellen again, through the bathroom door, and she tells him to go away. He tells her that her husband is in custody for Jenny’s murder, but he doesn’t think he did it. He asks her when she went out this morning where she went. As she touches the gash on her shoulder she tells him that it isn’t her, and that it can’t be. He tells her that he thinks it is. He tells her that he thinks she has a whole other side that she’s afraid to face, which would explain all of the broken mirrors - she doesn’t want to see herself for who she really is. He tells her that she needs to come out. She tells him that she can’t. Everything that she thought she had was a lie.

The camera pans around and shows that Ellen’s eyes have turned completely black. She says that she wishes he never came there.

Mulder pulls out his gun and opens the bathroom door. Ellen (as the monster) attacks him. She pushes his head underwater, trying to drown him. She sees her reflection in the water, and lets go of Mulder.

Mulder turns around and sees only a broken mirror and a frightened Ellen, crouched in the corner of the room.

Ellen has been put into a psychiatric hospital. The sheriff tells Mulder that she has a dissociative disorder - a split personality, but that it doesn’t explain what happened. Mulder tells him that he thinks it’s about as close as science can come to explain it. She has a multiple personality, but for her it is more extreme. He tells the sheriff that he thinks that he thinks his wife knew he was having an affair and kept all her emotions in and had to let them out somehow, and that she did what she did to protect her family.

Ellen looks out of the room where she sees some ravens.
