TEASER
HELENA, MONTANA
12:58 AM

Richie (see “Requiem”) is in Montana in his car following a bright light in the sky.

When he gets closer to the ship he stops the car and gets out. He goes to take a picture but his disposable camera doesn’t work right for him. “This is not happening!” he yells.

When he looks up he sees the ship lowering behind the hill ahead.

The camera pans to show the familiar ship become invisible.

When Richie gets there, the space ship has disappeared. He cries out the famous words again, “This is not happening!”

Richie sees a man wearing Nike sneakers in the clearing. Richie yells to him and the man takes off. He follows him, but trips over something.

Richie looks down to find a body on the ground. Once again he repeats the words.

ACT ONE
Doggett is in the office waiting for Scully. He opens up the desk drawer and takes out Mulder’s nameplate. He looks at it until he hears Scully coming, and then he puts it back in the drawer.

Scully walks in and tells him that on the phone he told her that he received something urgent. He tells her that she is right.  It’s something really important and it’s good that she came right away. When she asks him what it is, he tells her that he passed it onto Skinner, and would like him to tell her.

Scully goes to Skinner and asks what’s wrong. He has both of them come into his office. Skinner tells Scully of report from Montana of a UFO encounter. The person chased it to a big field where it disappeared. He claims that he saw an alien as well. Scully tells him that she has drawers full of reports that begin just like that. She asks him what is important about the
case.

He tells her that the one who was chasing the spaceship is Richie Salay—the UFO nut that she and Mulder met in Bellefleur Oregon last spring.

Scully asks him if he is trying to saw that it has to do with Mulder. Doggett jumps in, saying that Skinner is trying to tell her that it might.

Skinner tells Scully that Richie didn’t find an alien the previous night, but rather a woman—Teresa Hoese. Scully tells him that Teresa was the young mother who was abducted the night before Mulder. Skinner tells her that she was returned last night. Scully questions this, and he tells her that Teresa was returned hanging onto life by a thread.

ST. JEAN HOSPITAL
HELENA, MONTANA

Dr. Desi meets Scully, Skinner, and Doggett at the hospital. He knows that they flew all the way from D.C., but he wishes that someone would tell him theses things because Teresa is in no condition. Scully asks what her condition is. He tells her that she is “circling the drain.” In twelve years he has never seen anything near the level of mistreatment that was afflicted upon Teresa.

Doggett tells him that they must see the victim. He tells them that they can if they promise to do everything they can to catch who did it.

When they enter the hospital room, the doctor says that by all rights Teresa shouldn’t even be alive. The medic said that she asked for her baby the night before, but she has said nothing otherwise. He suspects that it is all that she is holding on to.

Scully is very upset at the sight of Teresa.

The doctor says that what is really upsetting is that it looks almost like someone was experimenting on her.

Skinner asks him what exactly was done to her. He tells them that the tissue on the inside of her cheeks have a lot of damage in a linear pattern. Her chest was cut into and organ tissue in her abdomen was scooped away. In an x-ray it showed what appears to be damage to her soft pallet.

Scully asked him if he found anything else. She wants to know if he found any foreign objects. He’s not sure what she means. She clarifies if by asking if he found any little pieces of metal—implants. He tells her that he didn’t.

Some cops come into the room. They ask for Doggett. He requested a report.

Doggett scans the report, and then tells Scully and Skinner that they are welcome to stay and discuss foreign objects, but it looks like they have a suspect.

Richie is sitting watching a program about Foo Fighters when Scully, Skinner, and Doggett come to his door. As Doggett walks into the room, he asks Richie if they can come in. He tells him that he already is in.

He notices Scully and says that he thinks he knows her. She tells him that they met in Oregon late last spring. He remembers and says that his friend Gary was abducted right before her partner.

Skinner asks Richie why he is in Montana when he lives in Oregon. He tells him that he came looking for his friend. Doggett asks him how he knew where to come. He tells them that he has been following the news. Chat rooms had been pretty quite when all of a sudden there was tons of news about Montana. Almost crying, he tells them that he never thought that he would find Teresa Hoese like he did.

Doggett mentions that he told the police that he saw an alien. He asks Richie if he knows what a malauge casting is, but he does not. He tells him that cops take one when they find shoe prints, and that they make a plastic casting of them. What they found were shoe prints from size 9 ½ Nikes. He asks Richie if he has ever heard of an alien in Nikes.

He starts to tell Doggett that that doesn’t mean anything, but he interrupts him, asking if it ever occurred to him that it wasn’t am alien, but rather a man. Richie asks, then, “What about his spaceship?”

Outside the room Scully asks Doggett what he was doing. He tells her that he was pressing the witness to get the truth.  Scully questions the fact that he refuses to believe that anything other than a man could have done it—could have done what the saw with Teresa in the hospital. He tells her that it is not worth arguing about. The point is to find Mulder. Scully says that for months they have been looking for a break, and that is what they’ve got. He tells her that what they have is hope, however; he says:

DOGGETT: Bad as you wanna find Mulder, you’re afraid of finding him too.

Scully just looks on.

Mulder is in the spaceship as before, lying, held down to the chair. However, this time, his skin is bleeding and pealing, and looks pasty.

Suddenly Scully wakes up.

Upset, Scully goes to Skinner’s hotel room. When he opens the door she asks him:

SCULLY: What if he’s dead?

She apologizes. She is almost crying—she just had a bad dream. Skinner tells her to wait and let him get some clothes on.

Scully stands looking up at the stars in the night sky when Skinner comes up behind her.

SCULLY: I once had a talk with Mulder about starlight, how it’s billions of years old--stars that are now long dead. It’s light is still traveling through time. It won’t die, that light. Maybe that’s the only thing that never does. He said that’s where souls reside. I hope he’s right.

Scully starts to cry. Skinner wraps his arm around her should, and she leans into him. He tells her that if she is trying to prepare herself, he wants her to stop. Nothing says that they will stumble over him in a field. Nothing says that he won’t be fine.

11:48 PM

Jeremiah Smith enters St. Jean Hospital. He shape-shifts into Teresa’s doctor. He tells the nurse that he wants a patient transferred to another facility. He wants Teresa ready to go as soon as possible.

The camera pans down to show that Jeremiah is wearing Nike sneakers.

ACT TWO
Scully’s phone rings. She reaches it from the bed. The person on the other end tells her that Teresa is gone. She asks who took her. When she finds out, she asks why the doctor would and where he is now.

Scully and Skinner drive up to meet Doggett. Scully asks him if he found Teresa, but he didn’t. He called them out to get another point of view. They should at least hear her out.

They turn to see a woman smoking.

Doggett tells them that he worked a case once with Agent Monica Reyes, and she has some expertise that might want to take advantage of. She has a Masters in religion, and her specialization is in ritualistic crime. At hearing “ritualistic crime,” Scully asks him if they are working the same case.

When they go over to Agent Reyes, she puts out her cigarette. She tells them that she’s trying to quit. She says that she thinks the case is “interesting.” She asks Scully what she thinks happened. Scully tells her that she thought that’s why she was there. She tells her that what they think happened, what did happen, and what they want to happen are different. She was told that Scully was involved in the case. She tells her that it may involve someone close to her.

She tells them that what she does know is that Teresa did not inflict injuries on herself. She was dropped there. Whoever brought her there cared enough not to kill her. Scully mentions the peculiar nature of the injuries. She tells Scully that it is peculiar, but not for some ritualistic abuse.

Skinner tells her that Mulder was abducted and not by a cult. She tells him that it is good if it wasn’t a cult. She just wants to keep an open mind. Mulder and the others that were abducted were all true believers. Skinner asks her if she is meaning that she thinks that they staged their own abductions. She says that what she means is that maybe they are coming together in a group. There are cults that believe they will be transported to the alien mothership, among other things.

Doggett guesses that maybe the leader brought her out and left her to die, but when he found out she was still alive he came back for fear of exposure. If they find the leader maybe they can find Mulder. Reyes says that she doesn’t think that they left Teresa to die. In fact, she thinks that Teresa is still alive. She just has a feeling. Of course, Scully knows that Mulder is not part of an occult.

Scully walks away. Doggett walks up to her, saying that it is possible. She asks him how the doctor seems to have been in two places at once.

DOGGETT: I know where you’re going with this, Agent Scully. But if you’re gonna tell me this is another alien bounty hunter, this is where we part company.
SCULLY: Enjoy your new company.

Scully walks away.

A man is watching Jeremiah Smith with Teresa. Smith tells him that they were almost too late.

Jeremiah leans over Teresa and places his hands over her face. Her wounds start to disappear. Tears run down the other man’s face.

Scully comes into a hospital room to find Reyes looking at Teresa’s CAT scans. She asks her what she is looking for. Reyes is looking for implants, or at least signs of them. Scully tells her she is confused. Reyes starts to explain about implants that have been found in places such as in the nose where they have been hard to detect. Scully tells her that she is well aware of how they work. What she doesn’t understand is Reyes interest in alien abductions if she is a disbeliever in the phenomena.

Reyes tells her that she isn’t a disbeliever. Scully is confused again. Reyes said that she thought that it was from a UFO cult. She tells Scully that she still thinks that, but that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t believe in the phenomena. Scully asks her if she believes in extraterrestrials. She tells her that she will just says that she doesn’t “not” believe. She tries to always stay open. She has seen satanic ritual abuse; or rather what people claim it to be. Scully tells her that they should talk some
time.

Reyes tells her that she was something of a black sheep in the office in New Orleans because of her beliefs. Scully asks which beliefs they are. She says that she has certain spiritual notions, and believes that there are energies in the universe. It might sound kind of cosmic, but she thinks that she is sensitive to them. She gets feelings. Scully asks if she has any feelings about Mulder. She tells her that she doesn’t—she doesn’t know Mulder. She tells her, however, that she is feeling Scully’s fear, which will not help her find him or anyone else. Maybe she can try to stay open too.

Reyes leaves.

Agent Reyes is driving in her car. She looks over to her box of Morley Lights, debating. She takes one. Suddenly the lights on the dash glow dimmer as the car slows. As suddenly as it slowed down it speeds back up to normal and the lights are bright again. Reyes turns and sees a bright light out the window, coming from a spaceship.

REYES: No freakin’ way!

The spaceship goes over the hill. She follows it in her car. When she gets there it has disappeared.

Jeremiah Smith is there. He covers a body in the truck and then starts to leave. Agent Reyes sees him and yells for him to stop. He drives away before she can stop him.

She notices something near her on the ground. On closer inspection she sees that it is a dead male body.

ACT THREE
Scully performs the autopsy on Richie’s friend, Gary Edward Corry. She talks into the microphone, saying that there are cuts and abrasions from ligatures or binding devices. There is bruising radiating in symmetrical patterns around his ankles, wrists, and face.

Scully is now almost crying, but she continues. However, Richie is lead into the room by the police. He is very upset.  Scully tells him that he can go, he just needs to sign a form.

Skinner, seeing that she is upset, calls Scully by her first name. She takes a few deep breaths and then tells him that she is okay. She has work to do.

Doggett is waiting in the lobby when Agent Reyes comes out. She tells him that she knows that he is hurting for Scully. He tells her that he wants to know what she’s doing and how she’s feeling. Monica tells him that he knows how she is feeling all too well.

DOGGETT: Let’s leave the past in the past.

She just simply tells him that it was his fear too—the three days when they looked for his soon, and the fear of finding what they did. She understands that that is why he is so determined to find Mulder alive. Doggett looks as if he may cry, but he doesn’t.

DOGGETT: It’s why I can’t stand her and listen to all this mumbo jumbo about spaceships.

She just tells her that she knows what she saw and that she won’t lie to him. She tells him that whatever she saw led her to what she found. She shows him a picture of a man named Travis Clay Moberly. It is the man that was at the camp with Jeremiah Smith. She tells him that he the man goes by the name Absalom. He is a religious man who escaped from a shootout in Idaho. He was a nominal leader of a Doomsday cult that believed aliens would take over the world at the Millennium.  Disgraced when they didn’t, he tried a different scam—credit card fraud. She ran the trucks plates and traced them to a farm about an hour from there.

At the camp, people sit in a circle around a fire eating soup. Absalom is there. Jeremiah Smith pulls up in a truck. He tells Absalom that they must get everyone inside. They are coming. They can’t let them find him (it sounds like he is possibly talking about Mulder).

The FBI charges in. Skinner comes up and yells for Absalom to stop and turn around.

Scully is looking around through one of the tents when she notices some cameras. She moves closure to see what the cameras are watching. Teresa Hoese is lying there—completely unharmed. Reyes is behind her. Scully tells her to get Skinner and Doggett.

During an interrogation, Absalom tells Scully and Doggett that he can’t explain why or how the abductees are coming, but only where. The ships come and drop off the abductees—all messed up. He gets them and tries to help them. Doggett asks if he helps them just like he helped Teresa when he left her for dead.

Scully tells Absalom that he says that the abductees are returned with severe injuries but that doesn’t fit the pattern of alien abduction models. He says that that is what he is trying to explain. He predicted that the alien invasion would come at the millennium. It turns out that he was right. That is when it all started.

Scully tells him that he has very little credibility, and to stop trying to validate his theories and give them the truth. He says that he is. He is only trying to help.

Scully asks him about the video cameras. He tells her that it is to make the abductees feel safer, because they are always scared that they will be taken again. Doggett adds sarcastically that it could be to scare them from leaving.

Scully asks him if there is any footage of people being healed on the tape. He tells her that they do not. She comes closer to him, very upset, and tells him that she had asked him to give them the truth. She pulls out a picture of Mulder and asks Absalom if he has seen him. He shakes his head “no.”

Skinner tells Reyes that he is hiding something.

Scully walks in her room to see Mulder standing in front of her. It is only a vision. Scully smiles, until there is a knock at her door. She opens it to find Reyes. When she turns around, Mulder is gone. She tells Agent Reyes:

SCULLY: I saw him…I saw, something.

ACT FOUR
Reyes has called everyone over to see one of the tapes from the farm. When they look at part of the tape, Skinner says that it looks like there is a body in the truck. Scully asks who it is. Reyes tells her that you cannot tell from the angle. Scully yells for a different angle, but she tells her that it is the only angle they have.

After a few seconds, Scully tells her to stop the tape. She recognizes the man as Jeremiah Smith. Reyes tells her that that is good because he is on the tape again.

Skinner asks Scully who Smith is. She tells him that Mulder knew him and he believed that Smith had the ability to heal people. Doggett asks what she means. She tells him that she means he heals people like he healed Teresa Hoese.

Reyes finds the part on the tape and tells them to look. It is Jeremiah Smith. He passes someone and is blocked by them. He shape-shifts, because when his face can be seen again, it is someone else’s face. Scully tells them that it is still Jeremiah Smith. Doggett yells that it isn’t. The man in the video is him, and he never even went into the building. Scully just says, “exactly,” and that they have to get back out there.

At the farm, Scully rushes up to the group of people and starts yelling for Jeremiah Smith. He doesn’t appear to be there, but she knows that he is. She sees a man in the back that she suspects to be him.

When the man walks into the interrogation room, his sneakers can be seen.

He tells Scully and Reyes that he isn’t Jeremiah, and that he didn’t heal anybody. Scully grabs him by the collar, saying that she knows who he is.

Suddenly there is a knock at the door. It is some agents. Reyes leaves with them.

Scully turns back around to find Jeremiah in front of her. He tells her that she is going to expose him and is putting people in danger. He is saving abductees all over the country, and he is the only one.

SCULLY: Where’s Mulder?!
SMITH: You came crashing in here. I was trying to help him too.

She starts asking him again about where he’s at when Skinner, Doggett, and Reyes knock, telling her that she better come with
them.

No longer Jeremiah, he tells Scully:

SMITH: You must protect me.

Scully goes out into the hall to talk to them. Skinner tells her that it’s Mulder.

Outside, there is a group of people huddling over someone. Scully starts screaming and crying, asking where he is at and how bad he is. They try to stop her from seeing, but she rushes over anyway. Mulder is lying dead on the ground, badly bruised from the experiments. Scully starts screaming and Doggett tries to restrain her but she breaks away.

Scully sees the light of the spaceship as she rushes over to the camp. She runs under the spaceship into one of the tents.  People are screaming and everything is shaking. After a few seconds, the bright light from the ship is suddenly gone.

Scully yells for Jeremiah, but all of the beds are empty. Scully drops to her knees and uncontrollably cries and screams, “This is not happening!”
