TEASER
FAIRHOPE, PENNSYLVANIA
There are a child's drawing's covering the wall.

Tommy is in bed when he hears something. He looks under the bed, and then sees something run by when he looks up at the mirror. He yells to his father to come in.

When his father comes in, Tommy tells him that there is something under his bed. His dad keeps insisting that there isn't, but Tommy keeps at him to check.

The father leans down and looks under the bed. He sees something scurry by. He stands up, looking frightened, but tells Tommy that there is nothing there.

After he has left the room, Tommy starts screaming. He runs to the door yelling for his father. He turns the knob but it won't open.

Tommy's father is holding the door shut from the other side.

ACT ONE
FBI ACADEMY
QUANTICO, VIRGINIA

Scully is walking out of her classroom as students try to ask her questions. She tells them that she will answer them later.

She goes into a private room and sits down for her five-minute break, ready to eat her tuna salad sandwich.

Just as she is about to take a bite, Leyla Harrison walks in. She tells Scully that she has a case that is an X-File. Scully tells her that she has five minutes before her next break, and that she will listen to her while she eats. Again, Scully goes to take a bite.

Leyla puts the file in front of Scully, open to a picture of a dead woman. Scully pulls her sandwich away.

Leyla tells Scully what she found out. The dead woman's son, Tommy, told his grandmother that a monster killed his mother, and that his father knows it. His grandmother is who told Leyla about it. She tells Scully to look at the autopsy report. After glancing at it, Scully tells her that it says that the woman stabbed herself. Leyla is skeptic that the woman could stab herself sixteen times. Scully tells her that its uncommon, but she has seen it before.

Leyla says that Tommy's father took him to a mountaintop, where even his grandmother isn't allowed to see him. Tommy also said that the monsters killed his cat, Spanky.

Scully (sort of) sarcastically tells her that she can't tell her anything without seeing the cat.

The bell rings. Scully asks Leyla if she wants her sandwich.

Reyes and Doggett are driving towards Fairhope. Reyes calls Scully.

She asks Scully her opinion on the case. Scully is confused. Reyes starts talking about the case, and Scully realizes what happened. She guesses correctly that Leyla is there with them. She tells Reyes that there is no case.

Reyes turns to Leyla, who is in the backseat, and asks her why she didn't tell them that she already talked to Scully. Leyla tells her that she didn't know that was who she was calling.

Doggett and Reyes are angry that Leyla misled them. Doggett turns the car around. Leyla protests, telling them that they are almost there.

After they don't turn around, she says to them that they came because they believed that a boy may be in danger-nothing has changed. It doesn't hurt to keep going. Doggett ignores her.

LEYLA: If Agent Mulder where here, *he'd* keep going.

Doggett turns the car around.

FAIRHOPE, PENNSYLVANIA
The father, Jeffery Conlin is finishing burying something when the agents pull up.

They get out and approach him. They introduce themselves. Leyla tells him that they came at the request of his mother-in-law, Dorothy.

Conlin starts to get annoyed.

Doggett notices something, and asks him how he got blood on his hand. He tells him that he cut himself on broken glass.

They tell him that they came to see Tommy. He tells them that his son is in bed. Doggett tells him that it's really early, but he replies that it isn't for Tommy. He tells them to leave.

Reyes tells Conlin that they want to see his son, and that Doggett is very stubborn.

Before he can stop him, Tommy has walked out of the house. He tells his father that he heard something. Conlin just keeps telling him to go back into the house.

Ignoring him, Reyes asks Tommy if he remembers what he said to his grandmother about monsters. Tommy tells her that there is no such thing as monsters.

The father tells them that that is exactly why he doesn't allow his son to see Dorothy anymore.

He takes his son inside.

As they walk back to the car, Leyla apologizes to Doggett and Reyes, telling them that she didn't mean to ruin both of their evenings.

Doggett tells her that there *is* something going on. The boy was lying because his father was there. They will go to the judge and get a warrant, and then come back and search the place.

Inside the house, Tommy tells his father that the monsters aren't going to let them leave. Conlin that they are going to be all right, they are leaving right now. He tells his father that it is too late.

Inside the car, Doggett turns the key, but the engine doesn't start. It sounds odd. Suddenly blood squirts out of the vents at them.

They check the engine. It's covered with blood. They think that a possum or something must have somehow got inside.

Meanwhile, there is a knock on Scully's apartment door. She comes out, angry because it is really late. She looks out the peephole and sees a man that she doesn't know. He tells her that it is Gabe Rodder, a friend of Leyla's.

Scully opens the door and asks him if he knows what time it is. He goes to give her a box and she asks him what it is. He opens it, revealing the dead cat, Spanky. Scully turns away, covering her nose. She tells him to leave and take the cat with him. Gabe won't leave. He tells her that he dug up the whole yard just to find the cat, and Leyla told him that she wouldn't go out with him unless he got the cat. Scully tells him that that is not her problem.

Suddenly Scully notices something about the cat.

She walks over and picks up the phone. He asks her if she's calling the police, but she says, "If only," and tells him that Leyla might be on to something after all.

Reyes and Leyla are in Conlin's house.

Reyes tries her cell phone, but it's roaming.

Doggett and Conlin come back into the house. Doggett tells Reyes that their engine is shot, and Conlin's truck won't start either, but he can't find anything wrong with it.

Conlin takes his son back up to bed.

LEYLA: Phones that won't work. Cars that won't start. It reminds me of a case Mulder and Scully investigated. A teenager who was struck by lightening-his body affected the electrical workings of everything around him.
REYES: I don't think that's what we're dealing with here, Leyla.
LEYLA: Agent Mulder wasted no time closing that case. I just try to think like him. What would Agents Mulder and Scully do if they were in this situation?
DOGGETT: Agents Mulder and Scully aren't in this situation. Agents Doggett and Reyes are. I don't know about Agent Reyes, but Agent Doggett's gonna sit his tired ass down.

Leyla asks what kind of course of action that it. Reyes tells her that what she thinks Doggett means is that they are in the best place possible. Doggett adds that they are all concerned for the boy's safety, and as long as they're there, nothing's going to happen.

Suddenly they hear Tommy scream from upstairs to his dad, saying that it's in there.

They rush upstairs to find Conlin holding Tommy's door shut. Doggett yanks it open, ignoring Conlin's plea not to.

Inside there are two giant bug-like things with big pinchers on them. Reyes helps Tommy out of the room.

Doggett shoots one of them as the other scurries away. After a few seconds, both halves of the insects form new insects and run under the wall, following the other.

ACT TWO
Tommy sits drawing. Doggett asks Reyes how he is doing. She says that he's way calmer than she would be.

Doggett tells her that he's checked the place, and whatever the things were, they are gone.

Doggett talks to Tommy. He's drawing a picture of himself and Reyes. Reyes tells him to tell Doggett what he told her. Tommy tells him that what they saw is what killed his mother, but his father tells him that he isn't supposed to talk about it.

Doggett asks Conlin what they are dealing with. He warns him not to say that he doesn't know. The things were in with his son and he knew it and held the door shut.

Conlin pulls his sleeves up and tells Doggett to look what they did to him. He has scars all up and down his arms. He tells Doggett and Leyla that they tried to kill him once. He doesn't know what they are, only that they won't leave them alone and he's dealing with it the best he can.

He tells them that it's too late. They mean to kill every one of them, and there is nothing that they can do about it.

Leyla and Doggett know that Conlin isn't telling them the whole truth. Leyla believes that he does know how to kill them, because she doesn't know what else he would have been burying when they showed up.

Meanwhile, Scully does an autopsy on the cat as Gabe watches with disgust. He tells her that he can't believe that she is cutting up a cat on her kitchen table. Scully just tells him to keep his voice down so he doesn't wake the baby.

Scully explains that Spanky may have chewed a hole in his own stomach, which is unusual behavior. He killed himself, just like Mrs. Conlin-the wounds are in the same place. She tells him that if they find out why he will have something to go back and tell Leyla.

Scully's phone rings and she makes Gabe hold the cat's ribcage open. It's the sheriff from Fairhope. She had been trying to reach him. She tells them about the case and that the agents are up there. He already knows the family. He went up there at the request of Dorothy. He had a shouting match with the father, but Tommy looked fine, so he left. Scully tells him that she needs to contact her colleagues. He tells her that the roads are bad and he can't get up there. She tells him that they may be in danger, and for him to please find a way.

Doggett digs in the ground. He finds something and tries to pick it up. He cuts his hand. It's just a piece of mirror from Tommy's room. Conlin tells them that he buried it because Tommy was afraid of it.

Doggett tells Conlin to go pack. He doesn't believe anything that he's told them except that they are in danger, and all five of them are leaving.

Conlin goes back into the house.

Leyla tells Doggett that she knows what he's thinking-black magic. Mirrors are powerful symbols in conjuring of the dark arts, and that's what it is. Doggett just says, "uh, huh."

Doggett tells Conlin that they can hike to the sheriff's station.

Tommy tries to say something about the sheriff, but Conlin stops him. He tells Tommy that the sheriff is going to help them.

Tommy starts to get scared again, and suddenly there is a knock on the door.

The sheriff is there. Doggett tells him that he's a sight for sore eyes, and that they need a ride. He tells them that they can't leave because of the roads.

Conlin yells to Doggett that it's not him.

The sheriff pulls out a gun. Reyes yells to Doggett, and he knocks the gun from the sheriff. They fight. Doggett punches him in the stomach, but his hand goes right into the man. Doggett pulls back his fist, covered in blood. The sheriff falls to the floor. They all stand stunned.

ACT THREE
Gabe holds Mulder's badge, looking at it.

GABE: So this is Johnny Fabulous, huh?

Scully grabs it off of him. She is on the phone again.

GABE: Mulder's so smart. Mulder's sooo dreamy. That's all Leyla ever talks about-Mulder and Scully. Scully and Mulder. Blah, blah, blah.

Scully hangs up. She keeps getting the sheriff's answering machine. Gabe questions that she seems really worried-she told him that there wasn't anything inside of the cat. She tells him that there wasn't, but you would expect there to be. It seems that the cat was trying to get at something, to chew something out. Whatever it was obviously caused a great deal of pain. She thinks that the same thing happened to Mrs. Conlin when she stabbed herself. It was a frantic attempt to cut something out. Gabe asks if she means that Leyla is in danger. She tells him that all she knows is that they're wasting their time talking about it.

Scully calls her mother to beg her to baby sit.

Reyes scoops blood out of the sheriff's body with a spoon and stares at it.

DOGGETT: Got anything?
REYES: Yeah, a salad spoon no one's ever gonna to use again.

She then tells him that the sheriff has absolutely no internal organs-he's like a big bag. Doggett tells her something else. What he's wiping off of his hand isn't blood. Whatever it is, it's probably the same stuff that all over the inside of their car.

Doggett covers the sheriff's face.

DOGGETT: I've been thinking. You know, I hate to sound like Agent Harrison, but Mulder and Scully had a case like this that I remember, where they were trapped underground with these mushroom spores that caused hallucinations…Never mind.

Reyes tells him that she doesn't know what to say either. Maybe Mulder and Scully would see something that they don't. He tells her that nothing there makes sense, unless that's the very thing that they need to see.

Doggett tells Leyla to take Tommy up to his room, but he wants Reyes to stay with him instead. He then hugs her. She tells him that she will, and she takes him upstairs.

Doggett tells Conlin that he's just a cop, and maybe he doesn't have the imagination to connect all of the pieces of the insanity together. He tells him that he said that it wasn't exactly the sheriff in there, and he wants to know what he meant. He knows that Conlin was trying to help them by warning them.

Doggett says that he moves up to the mountains, and locks Tommy in with the things. He suggests that Conlin is just trying to get rid of him. Conlin gets angry and tells him that he loves his son. Doggett questions why then he locked him in the room with the things. He tells Doggett that he knew that they wouldn't hurt Tommy. Doggett asks him why it is that they hurt him and his wife, but they won't hurt Tommy.

Meanwhile, upstairs, Tommy shows Reyes some more of his drawings. He says, "I made this." The first few are off him. Then Reyes sees one of the monsters. The next is of a woman with one of the monsters in her stomach. He tells her that it is her. Reyes asks him why he would draw that-why he would imagine such awful things. He just says, "Because I'm afraid."

SHERIFF'S STATION
SUMERSET COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA

Scully and Gabe talk to the sheriff. He tells them that the roads at the elevation are way too dangerous. He tells him that there is only one road leading up there. He tells them that he doesn't have the equipment to get them up there.

Leyla guesses that maybe Tommy is the center of it all somehow.

Suddenly Leyla notices something, and tells Doggett to look. The sheriff's body is gone.

Suddenly Reyes stumbles down the stairs, clutching her stomach, yelling in pain. She tells them that it is all the boy. Reyes lifts her shirt and they all see something moving inside her.

Doggett yells at Conlin, asking if it is his son that is doing it. He tells Doggett that he told him to leave. Doggett tells him to top him, but he tells him that he can't-he's tried before-he can't stop him from imagining things. He can't stop him from being afraid. He's just a little boy and doesn't mean to do these things. Reyes yells in pain that he does mean to do them.

Doggett tells him that if he doesn't stop him, he will.

Doggett finds Tommy upstairs. He follows him into his room. He walks through the doorway and falls into a deep void. He hits the ground. He looks up and sees the door far above him.

Suddenly the insects crawl onto him until he is completely covered and they are devouring him.

ACT FOUR
Reyes screams and tells Leyla to get it out of her. Leyla screams at Conlin to help them.

Suddenly Leyla covers her face. She pulls her hands away and they are covered in blood. Her eyes are bleeding.

Meanwhile, Tommy is drawing a picture of Leyla with blood coming out of her eyes.

Conlin comes upstairs. He goes to open Tommy's bedroom door, but is stopped by Doggett.

He tells him that the things aren't happening. How could they be? It's like he's been saying all along-it's not possible. He doesn't believe him. He tells Doggett that it is real-his wife is dead. Doggett tells him that she believed that it was real and she stabbed herself. However, because he couldn't believe it, not really, it couldn't hurt him. Not giving him a choice, he tells Conlin that he is going to help him.

Tommy calls to his father to come into his room. He doesn't get a response.

Tommy looks outside and sees the four of them. Doggett and Conlin are helping Reyes and Leyla into the car.

Doggett grabs a gas can and heads back in. He tells Conlin to stay there.

Doggett starts pouring the gasoline all over the living room. Tommy doesn't believe what he is going. Doggett tells him that if he doesn't stop him his friends are going to die, and he's not going to let that happen. Tommy just says that he is lying, he would burn too, and he is just trying to scare him.

Doggett stares at him and snaps his fingers. The match lights. He asks Tommy if he's scared yet. He then throws the match into the trail of gasoline and the floor bursts into flames, separating him from Tommy.

The furniture starts to catch on fire. Tommy stares wide-eyed at Doggett.

Leyla takes the cloth from her eyes. The blood is gone. She breathes a sigh of relief. Reyes sits up from the back seat. She is all right as well.

Suddenly, Reyes asks where Doggett is, realizing that he is gone.

Suddenly a snowplow pulls up. It's Scully, Gabe, and the Sheriff. Scully rushes inside, knocking Gabe over on the way.

Doggett picks up Tommy and then gives him to his father. Tommy passed out.

Scully starts looking at Tommy.

Doggett asks Reyes if she is all right. After nodding, she notices the gas can. She walks over and crouches down, touches the wet floor, and sniffs her hand. She tells him that it's water. He tells her that that's not what Tommy believed.

Back in the office, Gabe mentions to Leyla about the "I Want to Believe" poster. He questions that this is where the magic happened. She tells him that it is, and that it still happens. She looks to Scully and smiles. She says that she's happy that it's in good hands.

Reyes and Doggett walk in.

Gabe tells Doggett that Leyla keeps going on and on about how he saved the day.

Leyla tells Doggett that she really has to commend him-he solved the case. She tells him that if it wasn't for him…she doesn't even want to think about what would have happened. She tells him that it's clear that he was better equipped for the challenge than even Agent Mulder would have been.

LEYLA: Your lack of imagination saved our lives.
DOGGETT: Gee, thanks.

Leyla says that it didn't come out right.

Scully asks them if they found out anything about Tommy. Reyes tells her that they just got back from the psych center. The doctors don't know quite what to make of him, however, they have come up with a stopgap treatment. Scully asks what they are doing, and Doggett tells her that they've come up with a way to stifle his imagination.

Conlin walks down the hospital hall to his son's room. He looks inside.

Inside, Tommy sits watching multiple televisions at once.

There is a close-up of Tommy's face, and then the screen fades to black.

Overall Rating : 9
*Shippy Rating: 2 (Mulder's badge is at Scully's apartment)
*Note: OK a new note. Ratings will be completely different now because of the absence of Mulder, and therefore most likely of most of the shippiness. The ratings for this season are not equally comparable to that of previous seasons, so they will more or less be rated on their own scale, with me (trying to) disregard the fact that DD is not in it as a component in the rating. Shippiness still (if any) will ALWAYS be based on MULDER and SCULLY (unless I decide to do MR/JD or something later). The shippy scale is still based on the Redux II scale (1-10, as Redux II being a 10 [now with Triangle being an 11, All Things being an 11.5, and Millennium being a 12, and Requiem a 12.5 all above the scale])*
